Among them are Germany’s Tutima, which will have among its offerings the new Tutima M2, a hyper-masculine chronograph inspired by one of the brand’s classical military watches.
The Tutima M2 follows in the footsteps of the Tutima NATO chronograph, long known as the official service watch of the German army’s pilots. This timepiece — launched along with other significantly revamped models from the new, Glashutte-based Tutima manufacture at Baselworld 2015 — stands out from the chronograph pack with its large, central sweep-minutes counter. This function utilizes a dial train, which has been modified from the earlier Military model and is proprietary to the brand, to ensure a very legible reading of the elapsed chronograph minutes. The dial has subdials for small seconds at 9 o’clock, for 12 elapsed chronograph hours at 6 o’clock, and for a (very military) permanent 24-hour time display at 12 o’clock. The date appears in a window at 3 o’clock. The hands displaying both the time and the chronograph seconds and minutes, as well as the hour indices, are coated with Super-LumiNova.
The automatic movement in the M2 is Tutima’s Caliber 521, which is based on the ETA Valjoux 7750 and has 25 jewels, a 28,800-vph frequency, and a power reserve of 44 hours. Tutima has added an antique-gray rotor with an 18k gold seal. The movement beats inside a pearl-blasted, solid titanium case, measuring 46 mm in diameter and water resistant to 300 meters. The case’s inner core made of an alloy called mu-metal (more on which here) makes the watch highly resistant to magnetic fields. The sapphire crystal is non-reflective on both sides; the crown and the caseback are both screw-down. A final military-watch flourish comes from the kevlar strap (included along with the M2’s titanium bracelet), made of the same ultra-light, extra-resistant material used in bullet-proof vests. Each watch comes with the strap as well as a set of changing tools.
